Output Devices

This section of the course is about the devices that allow users to receive information from the computer in some way. These are called OUTPUT devices and there are many different types for many different purposes. In particular, the following output devices will be covered: Monitors/Screens, Printers, Speakers, Head/ear phones, Digital Projectors, Data Projectors, Plotters, Activators/Actuators. Most of them use one of the methods you looked at in Input Devices to connect. Click HERE for a reminder of what these are.

Objectives:

To be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of output devices
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of the uses of different output devices

Outcomes:

To be able to:

  1. Correctly identify a number of different output devices and their uses
  2. Correctly select appropriate output devices for different situations

Success Criteria:

Distinction/Distinction* Students:

Must be able to show a thorough understanding of a wide range of different output devices and be able to explain, in detail, the appropriate use of them and the type of output they give. The output devices from a range of different devices and will have identified correctly as will the most important keywords from the text. At least 3 different output devices and their uses will have been explained, in detail, without errors or omissions.

Merit/Pass Students:

Must be able to show a good understanding of a range of different output devices and be able to explain their use in some detail and identify the type of output they give. Most of the output devices from a range of different devices will have been identified correctly and some of the most important keywords will have been identified in the text. At least 3 different output devices and their uses will have been explained with no major errors or omissions.

Students working towards a Level 2 Pass:

Must be able to show that they can identify different output devices and be aware of their main use and the type of output they give. Some of the output devices from a range of different devices will have been correctly identified. At least 3 different output devices and their uses will be identified although the information given may not be in detail.

Teacher Notes

Do They Belong? This can be used as a card sort type activity or alternatively make a PowerPoint with the device names (or images) and ask students to create a list of those that are output devices and those that are not. The list can be found by clicking HERE.

Reduce It: Output Devices: Basically a "Slash 'n' Trash" exercise that asks students to take prose and cut it down to a list of keywords. All of these devices are listed in the specification but not all are covered

Tell Me About It: Output Devices: This task requires students to create a mind-map or presentation about the lised output devices in the specification that gives important information about each. This should be used as the main classroom task.

Missing Words: Output Devices: A passage with a set of missing words that need to be filled in. Could be set as a homework task and provides more information about some of the output devices listed in the specification.
