Computers and all sorts of different devices connect to each other and the Internet. This section looks at how this is commonly done and also at the security risks and protection you can take when using networks.

 

All of the devices needed to set up a network and the important terms used about networks (as listed in the specification) are covered in the worksheet "Home Networks and Devices".

Distinction/Distinction* Students:

Must be able to explain all of the components needed to set up a simple network and the purpose of each device, explaining how these devices work together. Be able to demonstrate a good awareness of security issues surrounding wireless networks and the differences between selectable network locations. The Home Networks and Devices Worksheet will be correctly completed giving enough information to fully explain each of the devices/terms.

 

Merit/Pass Students:

Must be able to identify all of the components to set up a simple network and their purpose but may not be able to explain how they work together. Demonstrate an awareness of security issues surrounding wireless networks and the differences between network locations. The Home Networks and Devices Worksheet will be mainly correct with enough detail to explain what each device/term is.

 

Students working towards a Level 2 Pass:

Must be able to identify the main components needed to create a simple network, although the purpose of each may be unclear. These will be mostly correct in the Home Networks and Devices Worksheet will be mainly completed although there may be some errors.

Teacher Notes

 

Home Networks: Although the specification is about ICT in business, the requirements for this part seem to centre on small/home office requirements. The presentation gives some details as to what is needed to create a simple home network. A set of requirements is provided and students are required to identify devices are needed and to explain why they are needed and what they do. This slide could be used to help less able students.
